Very small but I love the outside view from the park
This out-of-the-way, peaceful little reserve is one of Picton's best-kept secrets. It provides no facilities beyond a single wooden bench, but offers a splendid eastwards view, with a sloping hillside grove of eucalypts to stroll amongst, or to spread a rug and picnic. The reserve is near a cliff edge, so don't let small children wander. It's also a dog-on-leash space. There's a small, fenced-in viewing area. The distant prospect is mostly the untouched bushland surrounding the catchment areas of the Upper Nepean Dams, but you'll also spot the above-ground structures of a coal mine or two. In the foreground stand the Maldon Cement Works. Stonequarry Creek purls below in the gorge, and round the hill beyond may swing a train or two. The traffic on Argyle Street is far enough away not to disturb the peace, but interesting enough to catch the eye. The reserve is bordered by back-yard fences, so don't go too near unless you want to set every back-yard dog yelping. There's a memorial boulder with a plaque affixed which offers some spiritual counsel, if you look closely. The reserve is a project of Picton Rotary, though administered by the municipality. Generations of Wollondilly youth have gathered here from time to time, to glyph their initials and heart-throbs on a rocky outcrop, and drop tins, bottles, and lolly-papers down the gorge. Let's not join them. It's a beaut place for travellers to take a break, if they don't need a loo, or a tap, or a shelter shed.
